The other night we went to the St. Louis Science Center to be among the lucky few who experienced the Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey live premiere event, broadcast live across the globe to select science venues. The event featured a viewing of the premiere episode of Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey followed by a realtime Q&A panel with Neil DeGrasse-Tyson, Ann Druyan, Seth MacFarlane, Stephen Sotor, and others who played a part in getting the show up and running.

In case you don't know, in the 1980s Carl Sagan's Cosmos: A Personal Voyage was a thirteen-part series designed to bring science to the common man. And it was a gorgeous success. I recall watching an episode with Dad while we sat with our jaws hanging open in awe! While I don't remember what the episode was about beyond black holes, I do remember Dad and I getting such a high from watching it.

I loved Carl Sagan's passion for astronomy. The kids and I have spent countless hours listening to and watching video on youtube with Carl Sagan. For me, he brought science to my world and made it completely accessible to me. This new show is a very updated and far out version of the old Cosmos, Ann Druyan (Carl Sagan's wife) is the author of both! Her touchy-feely scientific script really hit the sweet spot between hard science and ...what...art?  Philosophy?

Cosmos: A Personal Voyage brought me fully into a love of the sciences. This new show will do the same for my kids, only this time with Neil DeGrasse Tyson!

My kids like and respect science, but I'm not sure that they're really in love with it. I am hoping that watching the show will spark a lifelong love of science, life, the universe, and everything!

So, for us, Sunday 8pm rolls around and I know just where we will be...I can't wait to share it with them!

And, for a bit of TMI,
both Carl Sagan and Neil  DeGrasse Tyson are on my list.
*wink*
